Superstitions

Recommended Posts

These posts are funny! I love them. Mainly because it makes me feel somewhat more sane. :P

I don't have any really mandatory superstitions that I have to follow - I did my best to break some of them this season. However, we used to drive hubby's red BMW roadster to every game. One evening it was bad weather or he was low on gas or something so we drove my black Honda Pilot instead. That was the first game we won in the current home win streak and we have driven the Pilot to every game since that first one. So obviously that is the reason we're still on the streak. ;) Oh, and I add my old Hurricanes flag to the passenger side window just before we arrive in the parking lot. Not before.

I do follow the practice of not washing whatever jersey I've worn to a game we've won - unless we are headed into a break (2 days or longer) or going on the road - then I can wash it. If we lose I wash the jersey ASAP. And I also wear either a Hurricanes top of some sort, or at least something red, on every game day. Luckily I have everything from Hurricanes t-shirts to long-sleeved t-shirts to a fleece, so I'm covered for all types of weather.

I was a little concerned when I've worn something outside the norm to a game - one game I did not wear my Hurricane earrings, but we still won. And last night I wore my SC Champions hat because it was raining - was a little concerned about that because I don't usually wear a hat to the games. But that turned out ok too. whew. Would have hated taking the blame for losing.

During the playoffs, I have a superstition that I have to have the car flags up for the entire time. This means you can't open the windows. This has caused some issues.

In 2002, my car dies so I had to start driving my pickup truck to work and back. The problem is, I have my other superstition which was I had to wear my Canes sweatshirt on gamedays and also my truck had no working A/C.

So as we got deeper and deeper into the playoffs, I'm riding around in NC in June in a sweatshirt in a truck with no AC and I can't roll down the windows either. I never broke it though.

In 2006, I'm in a car with A/C, so no issues with the car flags, until we are in the finals and my wife opens the window inexplicably as we are driving down the road at 60MPH. I see the flag fly away and she gives me that look of, "OMG, if they don't win the cup now I am going to live a life of utter hell from now on" and I frantically look for a place to turn around. I turn around, to see in the distance someone picking up my flag and driving away with it! Now I have to chase them down... so I do catch up to them, get them to pull over and get my flag. I reattach and then I can breathe again.

Just think what would have happened if I hadn't been able to get the flag back! You should all be thanking me. :)

When we had lost several in a row at home I deceded to go retro. Got out my oldest and nastiest Jersey (shelved the Nice new Black Sutter one). Pulled out the Whalers Hat and reinstituted the "buy a beer if we are behind going into the next period" pattern.

We started winning. I am happier between periods and my Jersey is starting to smell. All good Mojo.

Thank goodness I did not to forget to shower the day we got on a roll.

Still working :) Jersey is getting a little ripe and has some ketchup stains( frickin dollar dog night!).

Expanded beer ritual to include Tied or losing.

Bought some pins at the last game since they were 30% off. I could not put then on then. Now that we won they can be added.

Its all good.

PS Whitney is the MAN!

During the playoffs I had to wear the *Hurricanes Playoff Hockey* shirt every game day. Yes, it was hot when June rolled around and I was in long sleeves.

We also had BBQ from the Q-Shack for lunch every game day during the playoffs (always hot links with fried okra and hush puppies). I blame myself for the game 6 loss in Edmonton as we were in New York that weekend and we had the worst BBQ I have ever had (I was hoping the fact that I spent 3 hours *finding* us BBQ in NY would offset the fact that it was questionable BBQ, at best). We got back in just enough time before game 7 to stop for a to-go order before heading to the arena.

Saw her on the lower concourse last night sitting in a wheel chair. I hope all is alright.

Since we're now in the playoffs, I guess the guys can officially start growing their playoff beards. :P That's done for good luck, or something like that, no?

No hating going on here! The playoff beards are one of the nice "perks" to look forward to if we make the playoffs each season. A nice change! thumbsup.gif

I wear the same white shirt underneath my jersey until we lose and then I switch. Ive been wearing the same white shirt for 8 games now and I aint changing a thing. I also have left my Canes flag (house flag) up since we started the _ _ _ streak.

I may have to TRY and grow a playoff beard. Ive never had a beard before and it would be a good excuse to try and see what it would look like.

My Rod Brind'Amour figurine dropped his Stanley Cup before the Teams(and his) great play started and now refuses to pick it up now.

My dresser was getting pretty dusty..I did not want to disturb anything...after last night my wife told me to clean it off. Though Brind'amour will still not hold the cup and I think I'll take the trophy out of Cams hands too. I don't want him to get a big head.

have started my playoff beard pending the outcome of the first two games. I hope I don't have to make the sacrifice I made in '06.

For TV games, I will either wear a Canes shirt or hat, but not both. I'm not sure exactly how my clothing choice can affect the Canes when they are 3 Time Zones away, but I'm confident that it factors in somehow.

Just so you guys know how important this stuff is, I varied from this yesterday. I went to the Ale House for Cool Bars and since I wanted to make my best appearance, I wore a red Canes shirt and a red Canes hat, breaking the one Canes item rule for a TV game. I thought since it was a Cool Bar game, I could vary.

You know the outcome. It was all my fault. To make matters worse, I even mentioned a shoot out with 5 minutes left. Just as I was being beaten down at the table for doing this, Devils score.

I am currently debating on whether or not I should break out the giant red afro and bath robe for this years playoffs...it turned out pretty well in '06...except then we had mike commodore. Any thoughts?

Dye it white/gray and get some glasses, in honor of Dancing Granny. Someone had that suggestion a few weeks back.

Lol! I don't feel so weird now! Every game day I have to chew a piece of MINTY gum before leaving for the game and I have to obviously wear some type of hockey related clothing during the day. I also wish a certain thing (hopefully you guys will figure it out because I can't tell what I wish for) at a certain time left in each period. If I don't wish it in EACH period, then we lose. Two examples of this thing failing me while getting big-headed was that Philly loss when we were up 5-1 at the start of the 3rd. I didn't wish in the third period and BINGO! Philly comes back. Also, the very recent Atlanta game where the Trashers came back from a 3-1 deficit to win it 3-5. Bleh. I'm sorry about that!

Also, an odd story. So, I jump horses and I ride this horse named Dallas every week. The one night that I chose to ride a different horse just happened to be the night that we were playing Dallas and, obviously, we lost this game.

Another funny story (I don't know if it's quite superstition): Just recently, when we were playing NJ and came back to win it in the third period, I was tuning the radio to 99.9 The Fan before the game and I came across Gloria Estefan song and I was laughing to myself, remembering from the Casino Night review from Doug Warf that Ruuuu liked GLORIA, and then I thought, "We're gonna win this game and Ruutu is gonna get the game winner! I just know it!" Sure enough, he did. Does this mean Gloria Estefan is good mojo? Maybe he will convince the guys to play some of her songs in the locker room before the playoff games? xD

Last 2 games the superstitions were out in full force. I complied, and look at the results. One wasn't working well so I switched it in the last 4 minutes. Woohooo! Well, here we go again for the next series.

Started wearing my Red Jersey at the game instead of the new black. Two big wins...

Game 7, Five minutes into the third period went to the closet, grabbed the Red Jersey and put it on :o

Canes come up big and win game 7. :D

Wearing it all the time.... B)

Nobody can call me crazy on this one... it works.

Every game this year in the playoffs that I haven't worn my Wesley jersey, we've lost. Every time I put it on when we're losing, we win. When I wear it the whole game, we crush.

Here's some examples: I put my jersey on with about a minute left in game 4. Jokinen scores with 0.2 left in the game.

I put on my jersey game 7. Jokinen and Staal score back to back to keep us in the race.

I put my jersey on at the end of the first intermission (we scored twice), took it off after Recchi scored, then put it back on at the beginning of OT. Jokinen puts us up 2-1.

Looks like at the game on Friday (which I'll be at) I'll be wearing my jersey for Jussi to pull us through again.

Creepy stuff, but don't go messing with the mojo.
