We Really Should Be Ashamed

Recommended Posts

I'm not ashamed, you should know there are tons of relocated yankees down here that means there is a decent Pittsburgh fan base here already along with other northern teams. To the fans who drove down, I wouldnt have done it, but Kudos to them if they have the time/money to go see their team whenever they want they can go. Plus you know there are just tons of bandwagon jerks who always root for the best team in every sport/ just hate on the local team whenever possible.

Not everyone can afford to be a STH. If I lived a little closer, it would make life easier.

I didn't drop 3 bills on tickets, spend $100+ on gas, and make the 8 hour one way drive for Saturday's game. The audacity of me putting my daughter's private school tuition, my own college tuition, and the family vacation ahead of my favorite professional sports team.

I'm definitely an inferior fan.

Apparently. Which was my point. The OP was like, "if you weren't at the game, you should be ashamed." I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of bandwagon fans of the Pens in the RTP area who rushed out to buy Crosby gear and head to the RBC just to have something positive in their lives. I went to games when I could this season, including game 6 vs. NJ. I've never seen the RBC inundated with OTF (other team's fans). If you think the RBC is bad, you should have seen the Cap Center and the Spectrum in the 80s-90s.

It is going to be like this when they don't restrict the area code like the Caps did (Karmanos didn't do this in '02 with Toronto or Detroit or '06 either with Buffalo and this will continue to be a problem until he does) and the large amount of relocated Pens fans who live here. I saw at least 5 people I knew from school, around town, etc. that live here, but they were in Pens gear for game 3 at the RBC. If we really want this to stop then write to the Canes Front Office and voice our displeasure with the lack of measures taken to keep out the Pens fans who jump online to buy tickets and have the same opprotunities to get them as us in NC. The Caps did this and still sold out. We didn't have a whole bunch of Boston/NJ fans here in rounds 1 and 2 and we did great in terms of numbers of Canes fans versus opposing fans. We can sell out the RBC with our fans if our front office would allow us to.

Also you're going to get a lot of people in the area who happen to be NHL fans, but not Canes fans to come to the games in Pens gear as bandwagoners of the team with the NHL's "Chosen One". I'm a huge Sox fan, but I find it appalling to see the number of Red Sox hats now on some people who I know cannot name more than 3 players on the roster of the Red Sox team. Every star team in the league is going to get a large number of band wagoners and that is another part of the problem with the large number of Pens fans right now. The same could be said for Toronto in '02 and Detroit in '02.

I think that playoff tickets costs price some people out of attending. Face it, it is very expensive to attend. For those of us STH who get a deep discount, it's not as bad. But, many years ago I would not have been able to afford to go.

Restrict tickets? In this small markets? Not an option. Unless you want empty seats. And PK does not want empty seats. Bad business model.

Get back to the original point which is why can't we fill our arena with Canes fans rather than opposing team fans. Yes we are ALL model citizens and everyone is beautiful. Just make sure we have more Canes fans than Pens fans. Plain and simple.

don't know if you noticed but we have a lot of transplants down here, some have become caniacs but most root for the home team only when that team is in town (Pens, slugs, devils, rags). technically the arena is being filled with "locals" just that they don't always bring the red and black with them. Until such time as there is a waiting list to become season ticket holders thus filling the stands with caniacs during the playoffs, it is what it is. the other thing you haven't factored in is the price of playoff tickets especially in this round, given that most folks have tightened there budgets a bunch then how many will are going to be willing to part with $170 (pair) for the cheap seats to $1,000 (pair) for the best seats in the house? even had they limited ticket purchases to zip codes, so many live here that it would not have made much impact.

I am ashamed. I am ashamed it was a holiday weekend and some of the local fans may have had other plans that they made months ago and had spent money on. I am ashamed that everyone can't afford to drop hundreds of dollars for an entertainment opportunity. I am ashamed that PK has to deal with this as a business and felt like it was best to sell all the tickets he could. I am ashamed that college happened to be out and it basically became spring break for a herd of drunken Pittsburgh young men who bought tickets and drove down since class was over. Most of the "problem fans" that I encountered were in that magical 18-25 male group.

I'm getting a little tired of people pointing their finger at the fans, whether it's for our lack of attendance or maybe our "letting" the Pens fans chant "Cam Ward" or "MVP". The tickets were sold and that's all you can expect PK to go for. If the team could have sold out to only Canes fans, that would have been great. That isn't going to happen. Maybe we need to restrict registration on this board to certain Zip Codes. Would that be okay with everybody? I think not.

Look, I do my part. I haven't been a STH, but I've ended up going to about 30 games this year. I've taken advantage of the cheaper game day promotions when I could. When I can get cheap tickets, I drag any of my friends that are willing to the game. I'll take just about anyone when I can get a $10 ticket. That is one of the things we can do to build the fanbase. Oh, and I had 4 tickets for Saturday. One was for a friend of my wife that I sprung for. I just can't afford to take everyone I know at $100 each.

Oh, and tomorrow, I'm getting on the phone to get my season tickets for next year. I won't be there tomorrow night since my finances don't allow me to buy individual tickets for all the games at gate prices (you know, kids, food, tuition, other non-essentials). As a STH next year, I'll get them at strip price.

If any of you feel that it would help to have the arena filled with Caniacs. Get me a ticket or two and PM me. I'll go and I am loud.

to be fair, the Caps didnt quite sell out any of their home games against the Pens

regardless -- the owner (name escapes me) has to make a decision based on money. Home ice is overrated in hockey (and if anyone proved it, it was the Canes this year) -- until the owner feels he can sell out with all Canes fans consistently there is no reason to restrict tickets. And even if the RBC call sell out with Canes fans (which I know it can) - the owner can go either way.

Myself personally, I'm not a fan of restricting tickets, and thus I admire the Canes for not doing so.

the can't afford part is invalid or incorrect. canes give us so many ways to do this on the cheap. a twelve game plan is $171 in 334, in march you could have put a 30% deposit on that then had the balance spread out over 11 monthly installments.

Here's what bugs the *edit* out of me. Some friends of mine occasionally ask me if I have an extra ticket for a game. And some games I do as my 11 daughter is unable to attend. I have never yet asked for any $$ straight up. I do ask them to buy my 2 beers for the evening. All oblige. However, when I don't have the extra ticket and I know there are still tickets available, they won't buy a ticket saying they are too expensive because they only want to sit in the premier seating area of center ice. This galls me to no end.

What I do commend this organ-eye-zation for doing this year with greater frequency is the buy one get one free deals. I have many friends, not the one's mentioned above, that have kids and this is a great deal for them. We also use our vouchers and tickety exchange for the same purpose.

Obviously not your issue but some cant afford the extra $'s each month, no matter how spread out when they're out of a job or trying to make ends meet at home. In the rational world of family responsibilities, choosing high dollar sports entertainment over family needs is absurd and personally the only thing Im embarrassed about (getting back to the original post) is that fact people here who have the ability for the extra financial luxury are judging those that dont. This thread comes up about twice a season, when the Slug fans come to town and in the playoffs.

Looks like we can add Pens fans to the list of disrespectful drunken fans (not all of them) but for the 27 other fan bases to have worn their colors in our building over the years(see Edmonton and Toronto), the good has far outweighed the bad. Let the fans represented by the drunken idiots be embarrassed, not us.

They usually get 2 freebies on me then they can buy their way in. I have enough freeloader children.

1. Saturday, we were tailgating along the main walkway to the RBC and couldn't help but notice all of the Pens fans streaming in. There were several bike cops nears us and they heard the "at least they're not from Buffalo" comment more than once from Canes fans. I was thinking the same thing until there was an altercation over in 125 or somewhere. Not sure what happened there, but Canes need to behave too. We had a few Pens fans near us and they were not a problem at all. Of course I would like to see all Canes fans, but it is not a long road trip from Pitt, and they are excited too.

2. If we want to do something about it, I'd like to see more coverage locally (especially on TV) to get the locals excited. Our newscasters don't talk about the playoff beards or the tailgating as much as in 06. Jaded I guess. Where are the Canes PR folks? Just a thought.

I will be there Tuesday doing my part. LETS GO CANES.

There is nothing wrong with opposing fans who cheer for there team unless they do it obnoxiously. It is especially hard to take when they are Canes fans when their beloved Steelers (oops I mean Penquins) are not in town. Wouldn't you think these would be the ones that could cheer their team on without being arrogant, obnoxious jerks about it? Well congratulations Puttsburgh fans you have crossed the line into hated Slugalo fans territory! I know all their fans aren't that way but majority rules. I am sincerely hoping what goes around comes around for them and that they will be denied AGAIN by the Red Wings and that they will be treated to Hossa drinking from the cup.

If the organization is to restrict ticket sales, how far away does one set the barrier? As I was leaving the RBC there were several car loads of Pens fans who drove in from Wilmington. One cannot ban an individual because of team loyalty. If Pens' fans were taunting Cam, what's the problem as we have fans who taunt the other team's goalie even when he is beating us? What is good for the goose, is good for the gander.

Yes, the Pens fans were rowdy, but I saw nowhere near the hooliganism of the Slug series. Restricting the sale of booze is a possibility but not an ideal solution. Nor is restricting the hours allowed for tailgating. The issue here is one of frustration and misplaced expectations. The series wins over NJ and Boston gave rise to the expectations the Canes are legit contenders for the Cup. The whippings the Pens have dished out on the Canes have proved this not to be the case.

I sat next to a couple of pens fans Sat. They were pretty quiet until the 3rd when Scotty was laid out and the dude beside me started cheering his loudest. Then he made a classless comment about breaking Cole's neck (at which point I made an appointment to meet him outside). After the empty netter he really went off and a few very large caniacs sitting a few rows behind us escorted him down the steps.

The best way to keep the opposing fans quiet and in their seats is to be superior on the ice. We did not do that Sat, hopefully we will tomorrow.

Some 'Canes fans were thrown out in section 130...so both sides had their fair share of problems in my eyes on Saturday night.

In fact, I was a little stunned how Caniacs were responding to Pens fans...almost reminded me of this board...instead of letting them be some of us challenged them and took the bait all night long. Just have to be better than that.

Even if it is our home ice.

Why is this even an issue?

Guys, it's PITTSBURGH. PITTSBURGH. Have any of you ever watched an NFL game featuring the Steelers at another team's stadium? I don't care where in the league you go, you'll always see plenty of those chuckleheads swinging around those stupid yellow hankies.

The steel mills shut down, and those people scattered around the country. Even though the city is on the rebound, the ex-Pittsburghers are raising their spawn to be Pittsburgh fans (both Steelers and Pens) and there are also plenty of idiots who are stupidly enamored with the B.S. legend of Pittsburgh as a "blue collar" city.

I wish they would all move back to Pennsylvania instead of coming here, stealing our air, and yammering on about how wonderful Pittsburgh is.

They do this to everyone, not just the 'Canes. Until we get to the point where we have a Buffalo-esque situation (with Maple Leaf fans at HSBC Arena), it's not an issue. I hate seeing those yellow-and-black pukes more than anyone in our stands, but this is not an indicator as to how good our fanbase is.

Finally, Ben Brainlessberger is a Flyers fan. Ha. And Malkin's mom looks like a beached whale. I had to buy another TV after mine cracked during Game 2 because they showed her ugly mug so often.

I personally didn't like getting out-cheered in the RBC. My group set up our tailgating party at 1:30 and watched tons and tons of Pens fans yelling out the windows on the way in sooo...needless to say I knew what we were in for when game time finally arrived. I was lucky enough not to have too many really close to my seats since my section is mostly STH's in the row in front and in back of me. But yeah you could really here their fans when they scored in the RBC and when I watched the game back at home.

The fans were loud and in your face inside as well as outside. I heard a fan get thrown into a car hood in the parking lot and then a saw a fan get knocked down at full speed by a Pen fan on the hard parking lot ground. Big, big riot broke out in the West parking lot in the 5700 section. Not cool to see someone's head hitting the ground with a hit from behind. I wasn't there in person for the 2006 Slug Fest but I'm guessing this is what some of you witnessed. Very scary! Hope security is more prepared for Tuesday but most of all I hope the Canes can pull out a win to quiet down these 'idiot acting' fans. I heard several of the Pens fans telling other Pens to make sure to bring their brooms on Tueday...so sounds like they will be back so be ready RBC.

I can't knock anyone for not being able to buy the tickets for this round bc they are expensive. I was lucky to have the pay as they play deal otherwise I would not be there. I have attended every single game for the playoffs and let me tell you it's been a wild and crazy ride and it's not over yet!!! Looking forward to Tuesday!
