Ruutu filing for Salary Arbitration

Recommended Posts

Doesnt JR have some perfect record for not allowing negotiations to get to arbitration?

They go in front of a mediator who basically decides what Ruutu's fair market value is. Both sides get to plead their case and have to live with whatever the mediator decides if it gets that far.

If Im right, Chad LaRose came pretty close to going to arbitration last season but they came to an agreement before the hearing date. The same can easily happen with Ruutu. The hearing dates will be set for all players but teams can negotiate contracts between when the player files and the actual hearing date.

So what does this mean???

The player and team each propose salaries.... and and arbitrator decides the final amount. The hearings take place in late July or early August. The team and player can continue to negotiate/reach agreement up until the date of the hearing.

I can see JR lowballing Babs but I sure hope he isn't playing games with Ruutu. Starting to read like "we love the job you have done for us so here is 25 cents, don't spend it all in one place, have a good day".

Lets not jump to conclusions and start a fire storm. The negotiations with LaRose and Cole are proof that we as fans have no idea whats going on behind closed doors.

It not uncommon for players due big raises to file for arbitration as a bargaining tool by their agents. No one wants it to come down to the hearing so it helps to put a timeline on negotiations for both sides. Im sure JR made an offer, Ruutu's agent countered and JR said it was the best he could offer right now. Now they both have a deadline and a hearing hanging over their heads which will motivate them to reach an agreement sooner than later.

Babchuk isnt even in a position to entertain arbitration so he's probably watching this and not very happy.

not a big surprise - he wants to make sure he gets what he earns before the Canes go out and sign someone else.

I kinda expected this once we signed Cole and LaRose to be honest.

We have nothing to be worried about - as said itt, LaRose did the same thing last year.

Now who was it who said I didn't know what I was talking about when I said JR and Ruutu will go into arbitration?

I'll say it again, JR probably offered him $2.5-2.75 million and Ruutu wants $3-3.5. In the end I see the arbitration find we have to pay him more like $3.5 and we will end up losing him for being too expensive. Would be a shame but after signing Cole and Larose we have almost no budget left and we still direly need a defender.

I seem to recall difficulties with the negotiations last year, too----so we ended up with a one year contract. I think JR is intent upon keeping Rutuu---but it would be to our advantage if they could agree on more than one year. Rutuu deserves a contract more that 2.75, in my opinion.

Chad actually filed for arbitration last year. The filing deadline was the same date - July 5th. He signed a contract on July 9th. So all was settled well before the hearing date.

ETA: One other thing. Last year when Chad filed for arbritration Luke DeCock reported that the Canes had only gone to arbitration once and that was with Jeff O'Neill in 2000. Before my time here so perhaps someone can confirm.

Arbitration also protects Carolina from other teams throwing an offer sheet at Ruutu.

Once arbitration is filed other teams can't send an offer sheet.

I think i am correct in the statement above. Therefore, it could be a logical step agreed upon between Ruutu and JR to make sure they can finish negotiation uninterrupted.

IIRC this is similar to what happened last year with the Penguins and Fleury; file for arbitration as a way to protect exclusivity while a contract is being hammered out.

That makes me feel better. I know JR will work something out then. Rutuu is a keeper.

Ahh, that article was what I was thinking about when I asked about JR's perfect record. I couldnt remember if anyone had gone into arbitration or not but I remebered Luke making a pretty big deal out of the fact that JR had a great record. Funny, I thought Chad signed closer to the hearing date and not so soon after filing, you either have a great memory or do quick searches. :)

And the protection against offer sheets is a huge point, good call.

I know JR likes a good bargain, but technically we should have the money to pay Ruutu... We still have about 7 million in cap space left. I know he wants to stay well under that, but some have said he would break the limit for a good player. If Siedenberg and Babchuk both bail that's about 2 million, so he could give Ruutu 3 to 3.5 and still have 3 million in cap room left. I know that's cutting it close, but it could be done. Really I guess Sieds is already gone for all intents and purposes since he would have to be on a new deal, so at least we could save the million if Babs decided to cut bait and run, but even so, we would still have 2-3 million under the cap left.

Based on the way he came into the organization (rushing in halfway through a game with a police escort, getting a horrible gash and coming back and a million other things) I think he likes it here, has good chemistry with Staal and others, and probably wants to stay here and this is just a routine part of the negotiations. He doesnt seem like the kinda prima donna to be asking for something ungodly like 7 mill a year, he is a good blue collar guy who works hard and wants to be on a good team. He should be staying here once they get it hammered out.

Plus I would wager that ticket and tshirt sales will be pretty good this upcoming season after the deep playoff run, plus we hit the black last year going deep. The money should be there (I hope). I know the sales will take a hit since people will have less money this year then last, but hopefully it will still be pretty good.

You shouldn't assume because we went deep in the playoffs and made a profit that all that is available for use. I am sure most if not all of it went to payoff the losses from the prior two years.

But that deep run will still pay for tickets, tshirts and jerseys for THIS year. I know its like wishing on a star, but hopefully the money will be there.

I wouldn't count on it, i think we lost $7mil in '07-'08 (because we didn't qualify for revenue sharing) and $5mil the season before that. Assuming we made a $5mil profit this past year, I just don't see us selling $7mil in t-shirts and jerseys. Ticket revenues go to pay player salaries so you can't assume that is extra to spend after all Staal's salary jumps this season.

Its very common for players/teams to file for arbitration if a contract isn't signed by the deadline. Just because one files for arbitration doesn't mean they are going to arbitration.

Like I've said before, JR HAD to offer Ruutu's QO to hold his rights which is around $2.75M. HOWEVER, unlike Babchuk, we have yet to hear JR say that's all he's offering Ruutu. In fact, JR has said "we will do everything to get Ruutu signed".

I'm calling it now, they will use Clowe's signing in San Jose as the benchmark and he'll get $3-3.5M.

Clowe is a physical winger, 27 years old, 22 goals, 52 points, RFA.

Ruutu is a physical winger, 26 years old, 26 goals, 54 points, RFA

I'm sure JR already figured in the budget Ruutu's raise and if anyone felt LaRose deserved $2M for his play last year, then I don't know why you wouldn't think Ruutu deserves atleast $1M in raise for what he did last year.

I seriously doubt this gets to arbitration as GMs and players really don't care for the whole process.

He has also been very up front about his dislike for the business side of hockey. In his exit interview with the media, he flat out said he leaves it all up to his agent and then just signs on the dotted line when the time comes. So I am 99.99999% sure this is something between JR and his agent to make sure things go smoothly and not him asking for bucket loads of money.

Agreed.... and I hope you're right.... I would hate to see this go to arbitration have them not agree and Ruutu end up an unrestricted free agent
